San Diego's Beloved Ocean Beach Pier Faces Demolition

A city report is suggesting the San Diego's beloved Ocean Beach pier may soon be demolished, reports KGTV.

The pier has endured major damage during the winter storms and has been closed since January.

The report comes from a 2019 pier inspection the city released this month.

“Seeing it closed is nothing new," one Ocean Beach resident Mark-Elliott Lugo told KGTV. "... but the prospect that it might be demolished is devastating."

The Ocean Beach pier "has reached the end of its service life," according to the firm Moffatt and Nichol.

The city commissioned a report in 2019 after a January storm damaged it to the point of pieces washing ashore, reports KGTV.

“I'm upset that we didn't know the extent to which it was damaged in 2019 when they did that assessment,” said the head of the Ocean Beach Main Street Association, Denny Knox.

According to the report, the city can continue to repair the pier but degradation is inevitable.

They say the most cost-effective option for the city is to tear down and replace the pier which would cost about $40 to $60 million.

“I just can't imagine what it would be like not to have a pier. It would be devastating to these small businesses,” said Knox.

The city reopened the pier after repairs in June 2020 but it was closed again in January after another storm.
