Over 5,800 postal employees were attacked by dogs in the United States in 2020, according to a news release by the U.S. Postal Service.

They also released a 2020 Dog Attack Rankings by City. San Diego landed the No. 10 spot in the ranking only beat out by Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Denver, Baltimore, Dallas, Columbus, and San Antonio.

The information is also part of its annual National Dog Bite Awareness Week public service campaign. The campaign started Saturday, June 12, and will conclude on Friday, June 18. This year's theme is "Be Aware: Any Dog Can Bite."

Aggressive dogs always pose a serious threat to postal employees. To highlight the seriousness of this issue, the U.S. Postal Service has provided the public with do's and dont's of responsible dog ownership.

They say pet owners should:

  • Remind their kids to not take mail directly from a letter carrier as the dog may see the carrier as a threat
  • When a letter carrier comes to your home, keep dogs:
    • Inside the house or behind a fence
    • Away from the door or in a different room
    • On a leash

According to the U.S.P.S., letter carriers know:

  • Don't startle a dog
  • Keep eyes on the dog
  • Never assume a dog won't bite
