Gavin Newsom has proposed $12 billion in new funding to get more people experiencing homelessness in the state into housing and to “functionally end family homelessness” within five years… will it work?
Governor Newsom has been handed a staggering $75.7 billion budget surplus and he’s been traveling up and down the state promising funding for a multitude of projects. His latest promise includes $12 billion in funding to end homelessness, but are we just throwing money at a failed system? Will this actually help end homelessness?
I can’t help but feel like this is just a hail mary pass from Newsom to fight against the recall efforts, but I needed to talk with someone who knows the fight against homelessness better than anyone else here in San Diego.
I talked with Deacon Jim Vargas, President & CEO of Father Joe’s Villages about what Newsom’s $12 billion plan means to him, people experiencing homelessness, and all of San Diego.
